Until now, this site has been sadly bereft of any photos of the people behind Scrappy. No longer. We’re grateful to Dr. Richard Huemer for these photos, which likely date from 1930 or 1931, of the Mintz Studio staff. They’re wonderfully evocative, and we’re pleased to present them here.
Here we have the key players at the studio: Composer Joe DeNat, artist Art Davis, Charles Mintz himself, artist Sid Marcus, and artist Dick Huemer. (Click on the picture for a larger version.)
And here’s what seems to be a photo of the whole studio staff, including what looks to be a gaggle of ink-and-paint girls. We haven’t identified any of these folks except for the ones in the first picture–but we’re working on it. (Click on the picture for a larger version.)
Those are all the behind-the-scenes pictures we have on hand at the moment…but we’re working on getting more. Let us know if you have any you’d like to share.
My son Ethan is doing a video project for his Eight Grade history class about Walt Disney’s struggles with Charles Mintz over Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit. Would it be possible to get high resolution copies of the above photos to use in his documentary? Credit would be given, of course. Any photos of Charles or his wife Margaret would be of great use, as there are very, very few of either of them in public circulation. Any help you could give would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.
